What is Astrology?
Astrology is a system of tracking celestial cycles and mapping them to human experience.
It's neither magic nor fortune-telling. It is a structural framework for understanding
timing, temperament, and the patterns that repeat across nature and human life. A symbolic language!
Think of it like a cosmic calendar. The positions of the planets, the Sun, and the Moon at any given moment
act as a kind of "temporal snapshot", like a frozen frame of the sky that can be read symbolically.
Astrology describes events the same way a clock describes the time without
making it be 3:00 PM.
Origins Timeline
- ~2000 BCE โ Babylonians: First to divide the sky into 12 equal slices (the zodiac). Used for agricultural and royal predictions.
- ~300 BCE โ Egyptians: Refined time-keeping and tracked rising stars to divide the night into hours.
- ~200 BCE โ 200 CE โ Hellenistic Greeks: Merged Babylonian star-maps with Egyptian time-tracking. Invented the 12 Houses and the Thema Mundi (the rulership blueprint).
- ~8thโ15th Century โ Islamic Golden Age: Preserved and expanded Hellenistic astrology. Introduced new mathematical techniques.
- ~17th Century โ Modern Era: Astrology shifted from a predictive tool to a psychological and symbolic one, influenced by Jung and the human potential movement.
Why 12?
The Babylonians noticed that the Moon completes roughly 12 cycles in a single solar year.
They also recognized that a full circle is 360ยฐ, and divided evenly by 12 gives 12 clean slices of 30ยฐ each.
The Babylonians were rooted in mathematics and observation. The 12-sign zodiac is at it's core a calendrical tool.
The Zodiac Signs
The 12 signs are 30ยฐ sections of the ecliptic the apparent path the Sun takes across the sky over the course of a year.
Each sign was named after the constellation that occupied that section of the sky when the Babylonians first codified the system.
The signs aren't "personality types", but instead costumes or filters through which planetary energies express themselves.
- Aries โ Fire / Cardinal โ Initiation, impulse
- Taurus โ Earth / Fixed โ Stability, value
- Gemini โ Air / Mutable โ Communication, data
- Cancer โ Water / Cardinal โ Nurturing, protection
- Leo โ Fire / Fixed โ Identity, sovereignty
- Virgo โ Earth / Mutable โ Precision, analysis
- Libra โ Air / Cardinal โ Balance, relationship
- Scorpio โ Water / Fixed โ Depth, transformation
- Sagittarius โ Fire / Mutable โ Expansion, meaning
- Capricorn โ Earth / Cardinal โ Structure, discipline
- Aquarius โ Air / Fixed โ Innovation, collectives
- Pisces โ Water / Mutable โ Imagination, dissolution
The Houses
While the signs track where the planets are in the deep sky, the houses track where they are relative to your local horizon.
The Greeks introduced the 12 houses as a way to map the 24-hour rotation of the sky onto a fixed, earthly grid.
- 1st House โ Dawn / Eastern Horizon โ Self, body, first impressions
- 2nd House โ Pre-Dawn โ Money, values, material security
- 3rd House โ Late Night โ Mindset, communication, local environment
- 4th House โ Midnight โ Home, roots, private foundation
- 5th House โ Late Evening โ Creativity, joy, risk-taking
- 6th House โ Post-Sunset โ Routine, health, daily grind
- 7th House โ Sunset / Western Horizon โ Partnerships, contracts
- 8th House โ Late Afternoon โ Shared assets, transformation
- 9th House โ Early Afternoon โ Worldview, higher education, expansion
- 10th House โ High Noon โ Career, reputation, public platform
- 11th House โ Late Morning โ Networks, community, goals
- 12th House โ Early Morning โ Subconscious, isolation, behind-the-scenes
Rulerships (Thema Mundi)
The Thema Mundi is a master blueprint created by Hellenistic astrologers (Greece) to explain why each planet "owns" specific signs.
The assignment was based on planetary speed and distance from the Sun:
- Sun โ Leo (pure light, direct)
- Moon โ Cancer (reflective, cyclical)
- Mercury โ Gemini + Virgo (fastest, closest to Sun)
- Venus โ Taurus + Libra (next fastest)
- Mars โ Aries + Scorpio (slower, outside Earth's orbit)
- Jupiter โ Sagittarius + Pisces (slower still)
- Saturn โ Capricorn + Aquarius (slowest, furthest from Sun)
Modern rulerships: Uranus โ Aquarius, Neptune โ Pisces, Pluto โ Scorpio (added later due to discovery).
The structural logic remains the same.
Aspects
Aspects are the geometric angles between planets. They describe two different drives interacting โ whether they fuse, clash, or flow.
These are one of the few parts of astrology that are purely Greek, with zero Babylonian or Egyptian origin. Ptolemy
formalized the five majors (conjunction, opposition, square, trine, sextile) in the Tetrabiblos, which is why they're still called the
"Ptolemaic aspects" today. The core idea comes from the greek word for "beholding", a play on how signs and planets "see" each other across geometric angles.
The minor aspects came much later: Johannes Kepler added
them in the 1600s while studying musical harmony and cosmic geometry.
- Conjunction (0ยฐ) โ Fusion. Two planets occupy the same space. Their energies merge into one signal.
- Opposition (180ยฐ) โ Tension. Two planets pull from opposite sides. A balancing act.
- Square (90ยฐ) โ Friction. A right-angle intersection. Internal pressure that demands action.
- Trine (120ยฐ) โ Flow. Same element. Energy moves easily, almost effortlessly.
- Sextile (60ยฐ) โ Opportunity. Open door. Smooth connection if you choose to use it.
Elements & Modalities
Each sign belongs to one of the 4 Elements and one of the 3 Modalities.
These also came from the Greeks; Empedocles proposed the four roots (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) around
450 BCE. Aristotle gave them qualities. Ptolemy formalized
the three modalities (what we now call Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable) in the 2nd century CE. And it was Vettius Valens
who actually attached elements to the twelve signs. Ptolemy himself never did that, despite what many sources claim.
The Elements
- Fire โ Action, creation, enthusiasm (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
- Earth โ Structure, material, practicality (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)
- Air โ Thought, communication, connection (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)
- Water โ Emotion, intuition, depth (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)
The Modalities
- Cardinal โ Initiation. Starts things. (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn)
- Fixed โ Persistence. Holds ground. (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius)
- Mutable โ Adaptation. Changes and flows. (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces)
Western vs. Eastern Astrology
The zodiac split into two traditions because of one slow astronomical fact: the Earth wobbles on its axis over a 26,000-year cycle.
That wobble is called precession, and it means the Spring Equinox slowly slides backward through the constellations.
Western (Tropical) astrology locked 0ยฐ Aries to the Spring Equinox. Western tracks the seasons, Eastern (Vedic/Sidereal) the stars.
The Greeks became the face of Western astrology because Alexander's conquests spread Hellenistic ideas across Europe and the Mediterranean, and later
Arab and European scholars preserved and translated Greek texts rather than Babylonian or Egyptian ones.
Vedic astrology stayed rooted in India because the tradition was passed down through Sanskrit texts and family lineages that never depended on Western scholarship to survive.
The gap between them is called the ayanamsa, and it's roughly one full sign today. That's
why your Western Sun sign and your Vedic Sun sign usually don't match. Neither
system is wrong. They're measuring from different anchors, built by different cultures for different purposes.
Eastern astrology traces back to ancient India. The earliest text is the Vedanga Jyotisha,
attributed to the sage Lagadha and dated to around 1400 BCE. The sage Parashara is traditionally
credited with the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the core text of the system. Varahamihira later wrote the Brihat Jataka in the
6th century CE, which many South Indian astrologers still follow today.
We chose to use Western for this tool because it's what we're predominantly familiar with.
In the spirit of curiosity, the tool and information section will be updated with new features / findings overtime.

Horoscopes vs. Celestial Observation Tool
In 1930, a British astrologer named R.H. Naylor wrote a piece for the Sunday Express about Princess Margaret's birth chart.
He made a few vague predictions. One of them landed, and readers went crazy for it.
The paper asked him for more. Naylor started a weekly column covering all twelve signs, and circulation jumped every time it ran.
Other papers copied it. Within a few years, sun-sign columns were running in papers across the US and Europe. By the 1940s they were standard.
Readers didn't need to know anything about astrology to enjoy them. One paragraph, one sign, done in thirty seconds.
That format is what most people still picture when they hear the word astrology, negating a context rich history that spans thousands of years.
This concludes our brief overview of astrology's origins and lexicon. We hope you enjoyed reading, and that it inspires further exploration. -ฦ
